Hello, the size of the empire seems quite unrealistic to me. If Araulen really had such a small army, it could have around 30-70 thousand inhabitants, but the total size of Araulen is around 150-250km (100-180 miles) Vertically and 80-100 km (50-75 miles) Horizontally , thats i think minimum. If, for example, the Skandians attacked with their entire army or even parts of it (say 3000 soldiers), they could, for example, land under the river that flows all the way to Araulen, then simply surround them When they are on the river they will go down. Or they could practically constantly plunder the entire coast with a few ships and over the whole year (for example, 300 soldiers, 10 ships, and two ships could sail away for each attack [50 soldiers, for example])So the coast would be obvious without people .The real world was much more densely populated and the Vikings had a much harder time. What is the actual area of araulen and how many people do they have. Thanks for the answers! Bye!

I do not really know if we were actually given numbers regarding Araluen's area and population by John Flanagan, so I assume we could only estimate. Most countries in Ranger's Apprentice are inspired by real world countries of a few centuries ago, including Araluen which is similar to England. Though I have not done any research on the matter (and this type of thing definitely is not my specialty), it might make sense to compare with the real world counterparts of the countries for a realistic approach.

Yes, but just like I said the numbers don't add up. Our medieval armies had much larger armies. So I want to ask about the population and area.

In that case, I really don't have much of a thought to offer, especially for population, as I can't think of a way to find it unless a number was given in the books or by Flanagan himself. Maybe you could calculate an average if we knew the population of a single fief. For the area, perhaps an estimate could be calculated roughly by looking up the journeys across Araluen taken throughout the story, as in how long it took, by horse, carriage or on foot and from where it started/ended. Either way, I could not find a direct answer for either of these questions, whether online or by memory.
