Here we can talk about all things Horace.
To start things off, I was reading some random stuff and saw someone suggested that Horace should die to add some push to the story. What do you think?

I think that Horace's kind nature being mixed in with the Rangers building up his character development was nice and that he was a staple in most stories, so if he died, the story would feel pretty empty and sometimes a bit too dark. Horace, Will and Halt as a trio make up more than half of the comic relief.

Horace can NOT die!!! Seriously, that would be absolutely and utterly terrible! Talking about Horace dying, not talking about him dying at all, what do you think about Horace being a dad? I think he makes a pretty good dad but it's kind of weird how Maddie's an only child. In those days, people generally tried to have more than one child because there was a high death rate and a lot of children didn't survive infancy. (five years old) This would be especially practiced in the royal family as having the only heir to the throne die would be nothing short of disastrous.

I've never liked when authors kill of people I like. I remember how upset I got when Alyss died in the twelfth book.. However I know that it contributed to the evolution of the serie and was kind of necessary but still.. So if John Flanagan can come up with something that get the story forward in a interesting direction that requires that Horace dies then sure do it, but I will still get emotional and sad when I read it. :/
I agree that it sounds kind of unrealistic that Horace and Cassandra only get one child.

I can understand Alyss' death but Crowley's death just felt cheap. In fact, both of these deaths were done offscreen which made it harder to relate, the feeling and impact was hollow, at least for me. Still, as you said, the deaths definitely affected the characters and pushed the story forward.

I think they were kind of important though. It was done for a good cause. I don't think anything could justify Horace being killed.

I though it was pretty cool how Flanagan didn't do the normal by making him the bad guy (opposite of what he did in Brotherband)

Yeah, good "rival" characters like Horace are hard to come around. I loved hos character development from the beginning to the end, and loved how cunning he became to even best Will at times.
