The transition wasn't that smooth. When Erak first signed the treaty, it was only with Araluen and only banned organised raids. Individual ships could still raid if they wanted to, though they were 'discouraged' from doing so. I am probably wrong, but I don't remember a conflict as a result of the treaty. I can't remember any occasion were raiding used more than one ship, and Erak even said 'discouraged' meant no. Overall I agree that is was a wise choice, but a whole way of people can't be changed with the signing of a treaty. It was even said that the Skandians were a loose confederation and were hardly connected other than to defend against invasion.

That's true. However, we must remember that signing the treaty wasn't the only thing that happened in that book. If it hadn't been for Araluen, Skandia would have been taken over by the Temujai. The Skandians fought alongside the Araluens and many of them would have felt a sense of camaraderie with them. For the ones that didn't, they would have seen the value of forming an alliance, especially if Borsa showed them the statistics of what they were earning as naval police compared to what they were earning as raiders. Also, there were people who objected; Toshak organised Erak's capture in Arrida and it mentioned that there were others in Skandia who didn't support the Oberjarl.

Perhaps it just happened as a background event. But even if so, I'd rather see it as a side story instead.

The best way to see it is to write it. If you don't want to use canon characters, you could make it from your own character's perspective.

All these theories sound interesting. I never really thought about it that much. (I had started with the Brotherband books so I was already used to them being the good guys) But yes, seeing a fanfic for it would be quite cool!

You should write it, Sebias. It's about time you did a RA/BBC fanfic.

I have to focus on finishing my other fanfic series first. But maybe someday I might try writing a RA fanfic sometime if I get the time. (Most likely a one-shot though)
