One part of me wonders what would happen if Skandians ended up being antagonists instead.

Yep. If they stayed as the bad guys and the tension between Araluen and Skandia never calmed down, I think the story would take a much darker turn.

Yeah, it would be bad. However, the whole story structure would change completely. The Temujai would have taken over Skandia and probably Araluen as well. The only country that would still be semi independent would be Arrida, possibly Toscana.

We're talking hypothetically here.

Yes. Skandians are a rather important part of the story.

Yep. If they stayed as the bad guys and the tension between Araluen and Skandia never calmed down, I think the story would take a much darker turn. I like that idea, it would defiantly add some neat story. It kind of bothered me that the transition from bloody raiders and mercenaries to organized 'police of the seas' was so smooth. Did any of the common Skandians even want it? I know Erak said he would use his crew as enforcers, but what could a crew do against a whole nation? The Skandians would loose a lot of benefits by signing treaties and limiting raiding, so it would naturally be assumed that a good many wouldn't want to go along with it. A cool fanfiction could tell about the splinting up of the Skandian confederation as a result and the ensuing civil war.

Yeah, right? I became so frustrated at Erak for the events of the second book, but they turned into those sea police you described by the time the fourth book came around. I would love to read a fanfic with that topic. I doubt I could realistically write one, though. Using characters the author made makes me anxious to wonder if I could write them well enough.

The transition wasn't that smooth. When Erak first signed the treaty, it was only with Araluen and only banned organised raids. Individual ships could still raid if they wanted to, though they were 'discouraged' from doing so. It wasn't until The Emperor of Nihon-Ja that they were mentioned to be the naval police of anywhere else (I think) and it didn't mention any change in the rules so individual ships could still raid if they wanted to. Also, they're still mercenaries, they're just being employed by more respectable people. The Slaves of Socorro mentioned that it was far more profitable to be employed by other countries than it was to raid them. They got paid quite a bit and would have lost less people than with raiding, besides, when they caught pirates, they could keep the most of loot from that, probably the same situation when they caught smugglers. The story would be very interesting. I won't take it on at the moment but I'd love to read it. Writing canon characters can be difficult, especially if they have different personalities to you. I find the canon bad guys are the hardest.
