So, I was thinking (however dangerous that may be) that autumn would probably destroy Rangers, but I thought you guys might be able to come up with something; here's why I think it would make Rangers jobs hard: #1: Wind, it would make their cloaks flutter and make it impossible to shoot. #2: everything is different colours, making it very hard to blend in. #3: Falling branches and leaves; while leaves may be good to hide in, they're very loud, and you can't just walk around them, and then there are falling branches, (apart from possibly landing on and killing) they would drop twigs witch the Ranger may stand on, and thus give away their position, their horses tripping would also be a problem...
These are only three off the top of my head, and I know there's much more. How do you think they did it?

Hmm, quite an interesting question. I don't think it was ever addressed in the book, so all we can do is speculate

Didnt yhey have different colored cloaks for snowy places? If the did, they would just have a different cloak for fall. Fwiw, a little weight at the bottpm of the cloak would stop it from fluttering around

I've never thought about that before, but It would for sure make their job harder. A special autumn themed cloak seems possible. But I can't really see how they would solve the problem with the leafs.

But the cloak would then bellow, witch is much worse...I should know, I have a cloak (two, actually, but whatever..) And as for the colouring, that could work, but at the same time, what about when they're in town?

I doubt the wind would make it impossible to shoot, I mean Will shot an arrow down by reflex so it shouldn't be a huge bother, maybe making their strikes less fatal but not completely worthless. As for the cloaks, the colouring can be changed as everyone said. The wind will make staying hidden a chore though, but does it blow that hard all the time? I don't know about the weather of Araluen so I can't make a comment about it.

Somthing i dont remember them talking about is the temps in winter. They would of had heavy wool and fur clothes to keep warm. Would that extra weight make them not as capable?

Mm, it's quite possible, it would be very hard to move silently when weighed down by big heavy furs. And winter boots would make it harder too...So I think our rangers are in a bit of a sticky situation here...

As far as the matter of archery in the wind goes, they would be fine. It's not impossible to compensate for wind, it just takes a lot of skill and practice, both of which they have. Cloaks fluttering in the wind would be annoying if they're moving but, staying still, they wrap their cloaks around them anyway. As for leaves making silent movement hard, it is possible to walk quietly over Autumn leaves, especially since Araluen is based on England and so the leaves probably wouldn't be all that dry. As for twigs and branches, they simply look out for those.

from memory the cloaks were already quite heavy so they wouldn't be affected by the wind as much. They'd probably shift about a little, but everything else around would also be moving, so it's not as big a deal. Shadows are never completely still in the first place. As for leaves, weren't a lot of the trees pine and/or other evergreens?

Yeah, many of the trees were evergreen, from memory. There were quite a few other trees, such as oaks and willow, but walking quietly on dry leaves, though slow, is doable.

the wind may not be that much of problem, they have shot off of moving ships at other moving ships in book 9 at least, so i think the cloaks fluttering would be fine, also at least in the northern fiefs, i think it was mostly fields and pine forests, which would solve the leaf problem their, also if they are good at keeping their cloaks still(and it isn't windy all the time) then even with a noise it would be hard to see them standing still if they had season specific gear.
