Place for discussion of The Battle of Hackham Heath.
It confused me that Flanagan changed up the story and made Gilan the ranger that led the cavalry in a flanker movement. Not only was it originally stated as being Halt, but wouldn't Gilan be a super young if even alive?

It was necessary to have Gilan there because Halt had only come into the country a year ago and has been pretty busy during that time. Somebody needed to know the river really well in order to be able to find the ford and Halt didn't have time for any exploring. I know the legends and other stories say Halt led it but, in order to make it believable, somebody had to lead Halt. It was really a joint effort but twelve year olds don't normally get given the credit for winning a war. The cavalry attack was still led by Halt, Gilan just helped get them into the position to do a cavalry attack. To be honest, I was more confused about the fact that, in The Ruins of Gorlan, it said that they had gotten their fear of horses from the cavalry attack led by the Ranger but in The Battle at Hackham Heath, they already had that fear. I was keen to see how Halt had terrified them so much but I felt a bit cheated when I actually read the book. I also feel that the age is a bit messed up for Gilan. In The Burning Bridge, Gilan points out that he's being sent to Celtica because he's the youngest, and therefore, least necessary, Ranger in the Corps but, if we go by The Battle at Hackham Heath, Gilan's twelve years older than Will and therefore, twenty seven. It would mean that there hasn't been any graduated Rangers for seven years which I find a bit doubtful.

Even though changing it up made sense, it kind of messed up a bunch of other stuff
