Malachi walked inside the shop, already taking note of any possible exits and anything that could slow him down.
Front door, back door, side window. Better watch out for that table. Wait till that bulky guy leaves. His mental observations complete, he began watching for just the right time to act.
The moment came and he took it, lunging forward, grabbing two loaves of bread and escaping out the door before anybody could stop him.
He hardly noticed the cold wind as he ran, the shouts of the enraged baker behind him quickly being lost.
Twenty metres into the forest, he stopped and dropped the bread into a sack before climbing the oak tree and taking the ropes home.
His dad had put the ropes up as a way for him and his siblings to lose some energy. They all loved climbing trees and, after multiple accidents that resulted in three broken bones in the space of a week, he'd decided to put some safety precautions in place.
Malachi grinned sadly at the thought. His dad never would have guessed they’d be used for a thief’s escape route.
Malachi’s grin faded. He hated stealing, hated the dishonesty and, above all, hated the fact that it was the only way to feed his family.
He’d tried taking over from his dad but wheel making wasn’t as easy as it looked (which is saying something. It looked very difficult) and, even though he had learnt the basics from his dad, other people needed reliable service and he couldn’t supply that.
He had gotten a job from one of the farmers nearby but the man never paid him and the job took up the time he could be spending doing other work to put food on the table for his family. His employer wouldn’t release him and threatened to charge him if he didn’t get to work on time so he’d had no other choice but to steal food.
He shook himself out of his mental ponderings as he arrived at the end of the trees.
Climbing swiftly down, he ran the rest of the way home, stopping at the door to clean his feet in the bucket before going inside.
His mother might be sick but his sister wasn’t and he definitely didn’t want to make either of the angry.
